The golden age of horror was all but dead by the1950s, relegated to "B" status at drive-in movies and pulp fiction. Christmas catalogues from that period show that kids were into cowboys and Indians, cops and robbers, model railroading, and of course, sports.

That all changed when Universal Pictures released their golden age horror films for television broadcast in the early 60s. Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolf Man, and a host of other monsters stormed into livingrooms across America.

Suddenly, little cowboys, cops, and train engineers, wanted to be monsters, vampires, and mad doctors. Even geeks with no allegiances, suddenly had a place to call home. The only kids unaffected by the monster invasion were into sports. Who cared, they got all the glory anyway.
